Cover Letter Advice

Formal cover letter format

Look at cover letter format examples online.  The top to bottom order is:

  • Senders name and address
  • Date
  • Addressee name, title, company and address
  • Salutation “Dear Mr. Smith”
  • Body of the letter
  • Closing “Sincerely”, “respectfully yours”, or “Best Regards”
  • Signature

Three parts of the body of a cover letter.

  • First Paragraph – Introduction – who you are and what you want.
  • Second Paragraph – your qualification for this position, how you would be a good fit.
  • Third paragraph – good will – “I look forward to hearing from you” etc.

Cover email

If a company does not specifically ask for a cover letter the email you send should still use the introduction, qualifications, and good will format. They will just be shorter and grouped into one or two paragraphs.

How to write the letter

Write from the employer’s perspective. How are you a good fit for their team. Not what you want or what would be good for you.

Make sure you do a little research about the company and project before you write the letter.

Use business casual English in your cover letter. Use the best word for the thought, not the biggest. You do not need to use “utilize” when “use” would work.

Don’t start every sentence with “I.” It can seem egocentric. So “I am an animation student at Animation School” can be “Currently I am an animation student at Animation School.”
